Ninja Afrikaans (operated by LLLA Courses (Pty) Ltd) provides online Afrikaans courses for children, teenagers, and adults. We are committed to protecting your privacy and complying with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). This Privacy Statement explains what information we collect on ninja-afrikaans.co.za, how we use and protect it, and your rights under POPIA. By using our website and services, you acknowledge this policy.
Information We Collect
We collect personal information that is necessary for providing and improving the course, and for communicating with parents/learners. This includes:
- Personal identification: Learner’s and parent’s names, email addresses, phone numbers, and physical address (if provided).
- Academic details: Learner’s school name, grade level, and educational background.
- Account credentials: Username and password (stored securely) for course login.
- Course and assessment data: Responses to quizzes, reading activities, and pre-course assessments. During pre-course assessments, we may record any learning challenges (for example, dyslexia) to determine the learner’s suitability for the course and/or to tailor the experience. (No other health or disability information is collected beyond this context.)
- Technical and usage data: IP address, device/browser type, pages visited, and timestamps, collected automatically through cookies and tracking technologies.
We only collect information that is adequate, relevant, and necessary for our stated purposes. We do not request unnecessary personal data. For example, we gather quiz results solely to determine proficiency and proficiency.
How We Use Your Information
We use collected data for the following purposes:
- Delivering the Course: To create and manage your account, authenticate access, and provide course content and assessments.
- Communication: To contact parents or learners about course progress, support, updates, or administrative issues.
- Pre-course Assessment: To conduct the pre-course assessment and advise parents or learners on any special educational support needed.
- Payment Processing: To process invoices or payments securely. (Payments are by invoice/EFT; in future we will use WooCommerce with the Payfast gateway. We do not store credit card details on our servers.)
- Newsletters and Marketing: To send course-related newsletters or promotional emails only if the parent/learner has opted in via Mailchimp.
- Analytics and Improvement: We use Google Analytics (via Site Kit) and Google Search Console to analyze website usage, which helps us improve our service. Google serves cookies to analyse traffic and “information about your use of our site is shared with Google” for that purpose. We may also use Meta (Facebook/Instagram) Pixel and Google Ads to measure and optimize our online presence.
- Legal Compliance: To comply with legal requirements (e.g. court orders, tax laws) and to enforce our Terms of Use.
We process data only for the above specified purposes. This aligns with POPIA’s data-processing principles of purpose limitation and minimality. We also keep personal information accurate and up-to-date relative to these purposes.
Third-Party Service Providers
We engage certain trusted third-party services to assist us. These providers may receive some of your information for processing, subject to their own privacy policies:
- Payment Processors: We use WooCommerce (WordPress plugin) and Payfast (Network International) to handle payments. When you pay, Payfast processes your transaction data; their privacy policy affirms they process personal data fairly and lawfully, only for specified purposes. (We only receive confirmation of payment and any billing details needed for invoicing.)
- Email/Newsletter: We use Mailchimp for newsletter distribution. If you subscribe, your email (and name) is shared with Mailchimp under our account. Mailchimp stores this data on your behalf, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
- Analytics & Ads: We use Google Analytics and Google Search Console to monitor site usage, and Meta Pixel for Facebook/Instagram marketing. These tools collect cookies and usage data as described above. We do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties.
- Website Hosting and Support: Our website is hosted on secure WordPress servers at Hostinger. We may share data with technical support providers (e.g. LearnDash LMS services) only to the extent needed to maintain the site’s operation.
We only share information with service providers that are contractually bound to protect your data. When required, we use encryption and secure transfer methods. Any disclosure to government or legal authorities is only by lawful request.
Cookies and Tracking
Our site uses cookies and similar tracking technologies. Cookies are small files stored on your device that remember preferences and activity. We use them for:
- Essential site functions: Logging in, remembering settings.
- Analytics: Google Analytics cookies to count visits, sources, and content popularity.
- Advertising: Meta Pixel and Google Ads cookies for ad targeting and performance measurement (if consented).
You can manage or disable cookies via your browser settings. Disabling non-essential cookies may affect website functionality. For a full list of cookies we use, please refer to our Cookie Policy (linked in the website footer).
Children’s Privacy (Minors)
Since Ninja Afrikaans is primarily aimed at helping learners that are underaged, special rules apply. Under POPIA, we must obtain consent from a parent or legal guardian before processing a child’s personal information. Accordingly:
- No child under 18 may use our site without an accompanying adult’s approval.
- During the exploratory course phase, we consult parents individually before enrolling any learner. Parents must confirm they agree to their child’s participation and data being collected.
- By registering on the site, the parent/guardian consents to the processing of the child’s data as described here. This consent is explicit, informed, and voluntary, and can be withdrawn at any time.
- We do not collect any personal data about minors beyond what is necessary (e.g. basic learner details and assessment results). Sensitive information (like learning difficulties) is only recorded with parental consent during the pre-course assessment and used solely to tailor the education; we do not gather other health or medical details.
In summary, we respect children’s privacy by involving parents at every step and minimizing data collection about minors. We handle any required information with extra care, in line with POPIA’s requirements and best practices.
Data Security and Retention
We take the security of your information seriously. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures (encryption, secure servers, access controls, and regular backups) to guard against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. Only authorized personnel who “need to know” your information (such as administrators or instructors) can access it.
We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the stated purposes and as required by law. For example, account and progress data are kept while the learner is active in the course, and may be deleted after a period of inactivity or on request. We will securely delete or anonymize data once it is no longer needed for legitimate business or legal purposes.
Your Rights Under POPIA
Under POPIA, you have rights regarding your personal information. These include:
- Right to Access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you or your child.
- Right to Correction: You may ask us to correct, update, or delete inaccurate or outdated information. Profile data may be edited by logged in in users via their user dashboard.
- Right to Data Portability: You can request that we transfer your personal data to another service provider where technically feasible.
- Right to Withdraw Consent: If processing is based on consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time (for example, by unsubscribing from newsletters or requesting account closure).
- Right to Object: You may object to certain processing activities, such as marketing, and we will stop unless we have another lawful basis.
To exercise any of these rights or to lodge a privacy complaint, please contact our Information Officer (see below). We will respond promptly in accordance with POPIA.
